3-Alarm fire in Long Grove, 4-22-21 (more)

Just before 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 22, 2021, multiple fire departments from Long Grove, Buffalo Grove, Palatine, Lake Zurich, Prospect Heights, Mundelein, Countryside, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Barrington, and Elk Grove Township were called to a house fire at 3159 Cuba Road in Long Grove. Initial reports indicated that the homeowner was trying to put out a fire on the roof. The 6,000-square-foot home, featuring a cedar shake roof, is situated approximately 1,000 feet from the road, accessible via a winding driveway and a wooden bridge. As units arrived, a dispatcher reported that the homeowner had briefly reentered the home but was seen outside again. Upon initial assessment, Long Grove firefighters observed flames coming from both the front and rear of the attic. The situation escalated quickly, prompting an upgrade to a working fire and bringing in additional resources, including several tankers. An interior attack was launched, but heavy fire forced firefighters to retreat and switch to a defensive strategy. Long Grove Tanker 55, carrying 3,000 gallons of water, and Squad 55, with 730 gallons, were stationed in the driveway. Shortly after, Lake Zurich Engine 324 arrived with another 750 gallons, having laid 750 feet of 5-inch hose up the driveway. The alarm was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm, then to a second and third alarm as more units responded. A deck gun was used to combat the fire until the initial 4,800-gallon water supply ran dry. Additional companies established a water supply from the street, while tankers shuttled water from two fill sites—one to the east and one to the west. At one point, explosions were heard inside the home, likely from ammunition stored within. Embers spread to the east, igniting small brush fires. The wind-driven fire spread rapidly, ultimately consuming the entire structure. The home was completely destroyed, leaving no trace of the once-standing residence. A photo of the scene shows the devastation, with the massive 6,000-square-foot home reduced to ashes. Several other images are available in a gallery, though they appear to be placeholders without actual content.
