Just before 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 22, 2021, multiple fire departments from Long Grove, Buffalo Grove, Palatine, Lake Zurich, Prospect Heights, Mundelein, Countryside, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Barrington, and Elk Grove Township were called to a house fire at 3159 Cuba Road in Long Grove. Initial reports indicated that the homeowner was trying to put out a fire on the roof of their 6,000-square-foot home with a cedar shake roof. The property is located approximately 1,000 feet from the road, accessible via a winding driveway and a wooden bridge.
Upon arrival, first responders noticed flames coming from both the front and rear of the attic. A dispatcher had previously reported that the homeowner had reentered the house but was seen outside again when units arrived. As the situation escalated, the alarm was upgraded to a working fire, prompting additional resources, including several tankers.
An interior attack was launched, but heavy fire forced firefighters to retreat and switch to a defensive operation. Long Grove Tanker 55, carrying 3,000 gallons of water, and Squad 55, with 730 gallons, were positioned in the driveway. Shortly after, Lake Zurich Engine 324 arrived with another 750 gallons, having laid 750 feet of 5-inch hose up the driveway.
The incident was escalated to a MABAS Box Alarm, later upgraded to a second and then a third alarm. A deck gun was used to combat the fire until the initial 4,800-gallon water supply was exhausted. Additional companies established a water supply from the street, while tankers shuttled water from two fill sites—one to the east and one to the west.
At one point, explosions were heard inside the home, likely due to ammunition. Embers spread to the east, sparking small brush fires. Wind-driven flames quickly consumed the structure, leaving the home completely destroyed.
