Part 3 in the series covering Ward LaFrance and the Chicago Fire Department:
In 1973, the Chicago Fire Department added five more Ward LaFrance P80 Ambassador engines to its fleet. Four of these units were equipped with 1,500-GPM pumps and were assigned to Engine 23 (D-389), Engine 29 (D-390), Engine 57 (D-391), and Engine 67 (D-392). The fifth engine, featuring a larger 1,750-GPM pump, was assigned to Engine 74 (D-393). All five models came with a 500-gallon water tank, making them well-equipped for initial fire response.
Engine 74 stood out from the others due to its unique trim design. Unlike the other units, which had a polished panel on the pump, this one featured a red-painted pump panel. Additionally, it lacked the wide steel band that wrapped around the front doors and cab face of the other 1973 models, giving it a slightly different appearance. These subtle differences made Engine 74 easily distinguishable at a glance.
Compared to the earlier 1970 models, the 1973 units had some notable changes in their numbering and signage. The large company numbers were moved to the rear compartment, while a smaller number was placed on the cab face. Also, "Chicago Fire Dept." was now displayed on both sides of the cab, just below the jump-seat window, as well as on the roof above the windshield. Another change was the handrail at the back of the cab, which no longer spanned the full width—this was due to the installation of a multi-versal stored on the roof.
Several photos capture the distinct features of these engines. One image shows Engine 23, assigned shop number D-389, highlighting its classic look. Another photo of Engine 29 reveals the officer's side of the 1973 Ambassador model, showcasing the updated cab design. Engine 57 is seen with its 1,500-GPM pump, while Engine 67 represents one of the five new units delivered that year. Finally, Engine 74, with its 1,750-GPM pump and unique styling, stands out as a special edition among the group.
Later on, Shop #D-393, originally assigned to Engine 74, was reassigned to Engine 104, marking another shift in the department’s equipment distribution over time.
