House fire in Deerfield, 5-22-15

This is from Larry Shapiro:

Deerfield-Bannockburn firefighters responded to a house fire around noon on Friday, May 22, 2015, at 818 Forest Avenue. The RED Center upgraded the alarm before the first units arrived, based on a report from police officers who saw smoke coming from the home. Upon arrival, crews found fire on the first floor with heavy smoke throughout an older two-story frame house. Two hose lines were deployed, and the main fire was knocked down within just 10 minutes.

The response included a large number of units: Deerfield Engine 19 & 20, Ambulance 19, Truck 20, Battalion 20, along with Truck and Battalion 33 from Highland Park, Engine and Ambulance 52 from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Battalion 11 and Engine 10 from Northbrook, Morton Grove Squad 4, and Lake Forest Truck 421.

I arrived about 15 minutes after the initial call. Here are some photos from the scene.

Here’s an excerpt from the Chicago Tribune:

A Deerfield family escaped a house fire unharmed on Friday after one member smelled smoke, got everyone out, and called for help. The fire damage was limited to one room because the door to that room was closed. Deputy Chief Ray Larson of the Deerfield Bannockburn Fire Protection District said the closed door was critical in preventing the fire from spreading. “They didn’t try to open it—they just got out and called 911,” he said. Firefighters arrived, entered through the front door, and extinguished the fire in the affected room. Smoke spread throughout the house, but no one was injured.

Thanks, Dan
