New zeolite membrane for ethanol dehydration

Hitachi Shipbuilding Corporation of Japan is currently applying a new type of membrane to the HDS system for industrial application. The system is particularly suitable for dehydration of ethanol and isopropanol, from 10% aqueous ethanol - producing a purity of 99.7% mixture of ethanol and water, the dehydration rate is more than 2 times the conventional ceramic membrane process.

The membrane element of this system consists of a zeolite membrane synthetic porous alumina tube, one end closed. Hitachi Shipbuilding has been in ethanol production capacity of test device 30 m3 / day of validation of the technology, and plans to expand the production capacity of the zeolite film in 2008.
