Excerpts from DailyHerald.com:
Cook County commissioners on the zoning and building committee voted unanimously 14-0 on Wednesday to reject a special-use permit and zoning variances requested by the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District. The fire district had aimed to construct a new station at 36 E. Dundee Road, near a middle school and an early childhood center.
The proposed location sparked significant concern among school administrators and parents. Fire officials argued that the third station would improve emergency response times for areas like Inverness and beyond. However, the site's proximity to Barrington Middle School-Prairie Campus and the Early Learning Center led to strong opposition. District 220 Superintendent Brian Harris urged the commission to deny the request, stating that the schools were never built in that location with the fire station in mind. He suggested that the fire district should consider the study’s recommendation to build a facility in the western part of the district instead.
The Barrington Countryside Fire District called the decision a setback for public safety, claiming it was based on misleading information spread by a small group of individuals who prioritize short-term gains over long-term community benefits.
The fire district had planned to use the foundation of a house it purchased in 2016 for $500,000. The new station would have cost between $900,000 and $1.1 million. District 220 formally objected to the project, citing concerns about traffic congestion and potential impacts on property values.
At a meeting last fall, school officials and teachers raised concerns about noise from the firehouse affecting the early learning center, where the most vulnerable children are educated. County Commissioner Kevin Morrison noted that his office received over 50 calls and 70 emails opposing the plan. Although the county’s advisory zoning board recommended the station with the condition that sirens not be used, a site visit and feedback from both sides convinced him the project was not appropriate.
Fire Chief James Kreher said the district will now search for an alternative location to better serve Inverness and the eastern and southern parts of the district. He also mentioned that District 220 has shown interest in purchasing the Dundee Road property.
