Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District news (more)

Excerpts from DailyHerald.com:

On Wednesday, the Cook County zoning and building committee voted unanimously 14-0 to reject a special-use permit and zoning variances requested by the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District. The proposal aimed to build a new fire station at 36 E. Dundee Road, near a middle school and an early childhood center.

The fire district argued that the third station would improve emergency response times in areas like Inverness. However, the location between Barrington Middle School-Prairie Campus and the Early Learning Center sparked strong opposition from school officials and parents. District 220 Superintendent Brian Harris strongly opposed the plan, stating that the schools would not have been built in that spot if the fire station had been there first. He encouraged the fire district to consider a study recommending a facility in the western part of the district instead.

Barrington Countryside officials called the decision a setback for public safety, claiming it was based on misinformation spread by a small group seeking short-term gains over long-term benefits. They also mentioned that they had already purchased a house on the site for $500,000 in 2016, with the new station expected to cost between $900,000 and $1.1 million.

District 220 formally objected to the project, citing concerns about increased traffic and potential impacts on property values. At a previous meeting, school staff raised worries about noise from the firehouse affecting the early learning center, where the most vulnerable children are educated.

County Commissioner Kevin Morrison noted that his office received over 50 calls and 70 emails opposing the project. While the county’s advisory zoning board had recommended approval with the condition that sirens not be used, Morrison said a site visit and discussions with both sides led him to believe the project was not suitable.

Fire Chief James Kreher of Barrington Countryside said they will now look for an alternative location to better serve Inverness and the eastern and southern parts of the district. He also mentioned that District 220 has shown interest in purchasing the Dundee Road property.
