Fairford's new SDF soft starter with full replacement for star/delta starters

Recently, Fairford has introduced an inexpensive alternative soft starter, the SDF, which is roughly the same size as a conventional star/delta starter, with the greatest advantage of supporting both soft start and soft stop features. This provides more protection for the motor.

The company's design concept for this product is described as follows: With the simplest wiring, the same space as the traditional star/delta starter, support for both soft start and soft stop features, providing more motor protection of.

The product was introduced at the recent Hanover Fair, which gave a new form of soft-start control for the motor, using a "slope climb to the initial" while maintaining the normal connection of the motor to the mains supply. The voltage-voltage hold-slope ramp to full voltage control strategy overcomes the current surge problem of conventional star/delta starters. This approach effectively eliminates overcurrent during star-delta switching.

At present, in the various industrial fields in the UK, the combination of AC induction motor + star/delta starter is still widely used. Therefore, once launched, SDF has aroused great enthusiasm and concern.

The advantage of a conventional starter is that the voltage applied to the motor controls 58% of the line voltage during start-up. However, the shortcomings of this system are also very obvious.

First, this solution is complex and costly, requiring three contactors and a timing mechanism for contactor switching control. Secondly, there are 6 connecting cables between the motor and the starter, and the installation cost is relatively high. Third, when switching from star to delta below 80% of rated speed, large current and torque ripples will occur. Finally, traditional star/delta starters do not support soft stop features.

In the past, the main reason why soft starter products were difficult to completely replace the star/delta starter was its high price and production time occupied by equipment replacement. Now, using Fairford's SDF soft starter, these unnecessary costs are minimized. Thanks to the identical interface, package and form factor as the star/delta starter, the user can easily replace the SDF with existing equipment.

In addition, the SDF does not require all six cables. For upgrades of existing equipment, the SDF soft starter can be connected to the triangle using the original six cables; for new installations, the delta connection can be implemented on the motor side. In this case, only three cables are required for the motor to connect to the SDF.
