Greg was born on March 20, 1962, in the Calumet Region to Henry and Alice (Simala) Melyon. A lifelong resident of the area, he graduated from Bishop Noll Institute in 1980 and was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Greg began his career as a firefighter with the Gary, Indiana Fire Department, where he quickly rose through the ranks. He was part of Squad 2, a highly skilled and fast-response unit that handled hundreds of emergency calls annually. This team became one of the most respected heavy rescue units in the country.

Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Greg joined fellow firefighters in traveling to New York City to assist the FDNY. His commitment to public safety never wavered. After 27 years of dedicated service, he retired as Chief of Operations from the City of Gary. He continued to share his expertise as a training instructor at the BP Whiting Refinery, where he helped ensure the safety of countless workers.

Greg was also deeply involved in the fire community. He was a member of IAFF Local 359, the 5-11 Club of Chicago, the Fire Buffs of Illinois, and a founding member of the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago. An avid collector, he loved photographing fire apparatus and gathering memorabilia related to emergency vehicles. Traveling and exploring local food were some of his favorite pastimes.

Greg will be deeply missed by all who knew him. In memory of his life, donations may be made to the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago at 5218 S. Western Ave., Chicago, IL 60609. For more information, call (219) 659-4400.
