Greg was born on March 20, 1962, in the Calumet Region, to Henry and Alice (Simala) Melyon. A devoted local resident, he graduated from Bishop Noll Institute in 1980 and was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Greg began his career as a firefighter with the Gary, Indiana Fire Department, where he quickly rose through the ranks. He was one of the original members of Squad 2, a specialized unit known for responding to hundreds of emergency calls annually. This team became one of the busiest heavy rescue squads in the country, and its members were recognized for their exceptional skills and dedication.
On September 11, 2001, Greg joined fellow firefighters in answering the call to New York City to support the FDNY during the tragic events of that day. Over the course of his 27-year career, he held numerous leadership roles and eventually retired as Chief of Operations for the City of Gary. After retiring, he continued to share his expertise as a training instructor at the BP Whiting Refinery, focusing on safety and emergency response protocols.
Greg was an active member of several fire-related organizations, including IAFF Local 359, the 5-11 Club of Chicago, the Fire Buffs of Illinois, and was a founding member of the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago. He had a deep passion for photographing fire apparatus and collecting memorabilia, including die-cast emergency vehicles. An adventurous traveler, Greg also loved exploring local food scenes and sharing meals with friends and family.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago, located at 5218 S. Western Ave., Chicago, IL 60609. For more information, call (219) 659-4400.
