Introduction to the Key Points of Welding Hastelloy Pipe
Welding Hastelloy pipes requires careful attention to detail and strict adherence to best practices to ensure a strong, high-quality joint. Here are some essential guidelines for successful welding:
1. Before starting the weld, check the groove area. If there is any white tape on the bottom or sides of the groove, it should be removed and reversed. If not, clean the area thoroughly with acetone before proceeding with the welding process.
2. When welding, use a lower wire power setting. The heated end of the welding wire must always be protected by a shielding gas. Maintain a short arc throughout the entire process to control the temperature between passes. When the arc is terminated, make sure to fill the crater completely and delay the gas flow for at least 30 seconds to prevent hot cracking.
3. Avoid allowing the tungsten electrode to come into contact with the molten pool or the welding wire. Keep the arc length as short as possible to prevent tungsten inclusions in the weld.
4. Maintain an appropriate welding speed. If the speed is too slow, the weld metal may experience excessive heat input, leading to greater alloy element loss and an overheat structure in the heat-affected zone. This can result in larger grain sizes and reduced mechanical properties. On the other hand, if the speed is too fast, the weld may not fuse properly, leading to poor protection of the molten pool, incomplete metallurgical reactions, and potential crater cracks.
5. Welding supervisors should wear specialized gloves and protective gear. When filling the crater, take extra care to avoid cracks. A wind shield must be placed around the welding area. The gap between the wind shield and the pipe should be maintained at 1–2 mm, ideally between 0–1.6 mm. The weld surface must be free from cracks, lack of fusion, undercut, porosity, and slag inclusions. All welds must pass X-ray inspection, ensuring full penetration and proper quality in fillet welds.
6. Quality assurance is critical. All on-site welds must undergo radiographic testing, and both the first-pass rate and surface quality must meet the required standards. This ensures that the final weld meets the necessary structural and performance criteria.
