Police seek help in identifying arsonists

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

Following the tragic death of George Floyd, Chicago witnessed widespread unrest that led to the destruction of numerous businesses and vehicles. As the city grappled with the chaos, local police and federal investigators joined forces to identify those responsible for setting fires across the area. With the number of incidents overwhelming, federal agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), were brought in to assist in the investigation.

The ATF spent weeks reviewing surveillance footage from the events, and on Tuesday, they released images from just 10 of the many fires that occurred. One incident took place at City Sports in Englewood on May 31, where two suspects entered a looted store and set fire to papers on the floor using a lighter. A similar act was captured at a beauty supply store in Archer Heights, where a suspect poured an unknown liquid over a counter before igniting it.

Throughout the weekend, hundreds of stores were looted and dozens of fires were started across the city, from the Loop to the South and West Sides. In an effort to bring those responsible to justice, the Chicago Police Department, in partnership with federal authorities, has released surveillance videos and photos of 19 individuals linked to some of the 53 fires that occurred between May 31 and June 3. These materials are now available on the CPD’s YouTube channel, hoping that public awareness will lead to arrests.

Those arrested could face federal charges as part of a broader national initiative to hold accountable anyone involved in crimes during the civil unrest. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is working closely with local law enforcement to ensure justice is served.
