Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:
Following the death of George Floyd, violent unrest swept through Chicago, resulting in numerous fires set across the city. Police and federal investigators are working together to identify those responsible for igniting dozens of businesses and vehicles. Due to the overwhelming number of incidents, federal agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), were brought in to assist with the investigation.
The ATF spent weeks reviewing surveillance footage from the chaotic weekend. On Tuesday, they released images from just 10 of the many fires that occurred. One of the cases involved a fire at City Sports in Englewood on May 31. Two individuals entered the already looted store and, while inside, one used a lighter to set fire to some documents on the floor. A similar scene was captured at a beauty supply store in Archer Heights, where a suspect poured a flammable substance over a counter before setting it ablaze.
From the Loop to the South and West Sides, hundreds of stores were looted and dozens of fires were started during the unrest. In an effort to track down those responsible, the Chicago Police Department, along with federal authorities, has released surveillance images and videos of 19 suspects linked to some of the 53 fires that occurred between May 31 and June 3. These materials have been posted on the CPD’s YouTube channel, hoping that public awareness might lead to arrests.
Those arrested could face federal charges, as the U.S. Attorney’s Office is part of a broader national initiative to prosecute individuals involved in crimes committed during the civil unrest.
