On December 11, 2017, firefighters from Bartlett responded to a serious fire at 1760 Hilltop Road in unincorporated Elgin. The incident began when crews arrived at an attached garage that was fully engulfed in flames, with the fire already spreading into the main house. Due to the intensity of the fire, strong wind conditions, and the absence of nearby fire hydrants, the department activated a MABAS Box to bring in additional personnel and equipment to control the blaze.
The situation was challenging, and it took significant effort from multiple fire units to contain the fire and prevent further damage. Local residents were advised to stay clear of the area as crews worked through the night to ensure the fire was completely under control.
A video posted on Facebook captured some of the intense firefighting efforts, showing crews working under difficult conditions. Several photos from the scene, taken by John Tulipano, highlight the scale of the fire and the dedication of the firefighters who responded to the call.
These images show firefighters using hose lines, working in the dark, and operating fire engines in an attempt to put out the flames. One photo even shows a fire engine "drafting" water from a nearby source due to the lack of hydrants in the area.
This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by first responders and the importance of having adequate resources available in rural areas. Thanks to the quick response and coordination between departments, the fire was eventually brought under control, and no injuries were reported.
