Since its founding, the CSIC Ship Design and Research Center has been deeply involved in market research, working closely with shipyards to align product strategies with industry needs. This approach has led to significant achievements in developing new ship types. In 2004, the center collaborated with the former Dalian Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. to design a 76,000-ton oil and product carrier, which quickly gained popularity, resulting in eight subsequent orders.
In 2005, the center successfully completed the development of six new ship types, including the Type 6 ship, and provided design support for various projects. Notably, the 111,000-ton and 17,000-ton multi-purpose cargo ships designed for Tianjin Xingang Shipyard received a total of eight orders, while the 1,300TEU container ship developed for Shanhaiguan Shipyard secured three contracts. More recently, the center played a key role in helping Shanhaiguan Shipyard finalize a deal for four 30,000-ton Dahu-type bulk carriers.
The Ship Design Center has always prioritized the interests of the shipyards it works with, earning recognition for its advanced design capabilities, cost-effective solutions, and on-site support. For example, the joint development of the 76,000-ton product oil tanker with Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Group not only met international standards in terms of carrying capacity, speed, and performance but also featured optimized hull structures and equipment layouts, making it a standard model for Panamax product tankers.
Currently, the center has nearly finished the design review for the 118,000-ton multi-purpose cargo ship tailored for Xingang Shipyard. This project features world-class technical specifications, with improvements such as optimized hull structure, reduced steel usage, lower system costs, and minimized procurement expenses through better layout and equipment selection. These innovations have earned high praise from the shipyard, reinforcing the center’s reputation as a leader in ship design and development.
