The seeds of a concentric culture

Wang Yanlei This fast-talking Shandong Dahan has been working in Weichai for more than 20 years. With Weichai growing from a local diesel engine plant to a powertrain group for transnational operations, Wang Yanlei also grew from an apprentice worker to deputy director of the Weichai 615 plant. At noon in June 1998, Wang Yanlei remembered clearly that the day was hot and hot. Weichai held a factory-wide employee meeting that was still unforgettable for many years and was the first time that Tan Xuguang, who had been appointed as the director of the Weichai plant, gave a speech.

Tan Xuguang promised at the meeting that Weichai will pay monthly wages in the future. Employees who haven’t received wages for half a year have heard this statement. Surprisingly, they immediately received warm applause.

Paying monthly wages is a simple but normal behavior of a company. However, in the past, Weichai was a feat that made listeners move and the parties were tempted. After years of losses, the company can be said to be deadly. At that time, it was said that Weichai only had a few tens of thousands of books on its books. It can be said that it is the entire family of 14,000 employees, and the debt is more than 300 million yuan. This old state-owned enterprise, which has a history of 60 years, many workers and staff members have been working for Weichai for several generations. There is no income for the family for half a year. The difficulties of living can be imagined. Some of the employees even started to spread their livelihoods.

In the suspicion and expectation of all factory workers, Tan Xuguang took office only nine days. Weichai factory staff received a replacement for two months of wages. Every month afterwards, the workers got their living money on time. At the end of 1998, Weichai Qing repaid all wages owed to employees for several years.

Weichai workers and other workers came to their leadership team and told everyone that they were "satisfied." Since then, Weichai has gradually emerged from the trough, and China’s internal combustion engine industry has ushered in the dominant era of Weichai.

After many years, all the employees who have experienced these days personally have referred to this matter and are still emotional. The new leadership team took employee benefits as a down-to-earth style for the company to do practical things, ignited the hope of the Weichai people, and won the hearts of all employees.
