Excerpts from FireRescue1.com:
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) recently released the 2016 Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG2016), offering a crucial resource for firefighters and emergency personnel to handle hazardous material incidents effectively during the critical first moments.
This updated guide is distributed free of charge to over 1.5 million first responders, including firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and law enforcement officers across the country. It helps them quickly identify risks associated with dangerous goods and implement the necessary safety measures to protect themselves and manage the situation efficiently.
The ERG provides an indexed list of hazardous materials along with their four-digit United Nations numbers. It outlines the general dangers each substance poses and recommends specific safety procedures for responding to hazmat emergencies.
Revised every four years through collaboration between the USDOT, Transport Canada, and Mexico's Secretariat of Transport and Communications, the ERG2016 is available at no cost to public safety agencies in all U.S. states, territories, and Native American tribes via designated state emergency management coordinators.
In addition, PHMSA has partnered with the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to offer a free mobile version of the ERG2016. The NLM also manages the Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders, and the smartphone app will be launched this spring.
A digital version of the ERG2016 is available online, while print copies can be purchased through the U.S. Government Printing Office Bookstore and other commercial vendors. This ensures that both professionals and the public have access to vital information about hazardous materials response.
