Excerpts from chronicleillinois.com:
Lawrence Matthews, a firefighter from Dolton, will be honored at the 37th National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service on October 7. He passed away in June 2017 while responding to a fire at a mobile home park in Harvey. As one of 80 firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty that year, his name will be among those remembered in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
Matthews had been with the Dolton Fire Department since 2009 and is survived by his wife and four children. Despite being on light duty due to health issues, he was cleared to return to active service just days before his tragic death. His passing came shortly after he celebrated the 10th anniversary of his heart transplant, marking a bittersweet moment for his family.
A plaque at the Dolton fire station and a street named in his honor stand as lasting tributes to his service. At the national memorial, his name will be read aloud as his family receives an American flag that has flown over the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial and the U.S. Capitol. Each family will also be given a red rose and a personalized badge, while a bronze plaque bearing the names of all the fallen firefighters will be added to the memorial during the ceremony.
The event begins at 9 a.m. (Central Daylight Time) on October 7 at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg. A candlelight service will take place the night before, starting at 5:30 p.m. (CDT). The ceremony is expected to draw more than 5,000 attendees, including family members, firefighters, lawmakers, and officials.
On October 4, the Congressional Fire Service Caucus will present 103 American flags that flew over the U.S. Capitol to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. These flags will be displayed in the memorial chapel until they are presented to the families on October 7.
Dennis Compton, chairman of the NFFF Board of Directors, said, “Memorials are created so there will always be a special place to remember and honor our loved ones. Since 1981, the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial has stood as a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.â€
Firefighter honor guards and pipe & drum units from across the country will participate in the remembrance. For those unable to attend in person, live streaming of the events will be available through VISTA Worldlink at http://live.firehero.org.
