Double Fatal Chicago Still & Box Alarm Fire 2-11-12

Chicago firefighters responded to a house fire on Saturday at 10728 South Prairie Avenue, where they rescued a 66-year-old woman but failed to locate a young boy in the attic. According to reports from The Chicago Tribune: "Firefighters were called to the 1½-story frame home around 10 a.m. and found smoke and flames primarily coming from the basement, said Fire Department spokesman Kevin MacGregor. The fire was spreading quickly up the inside of the home’s walls," he added. Later, it was revealed that a 7-year-old boy was found dead in an attic crawlspace several hours after the fire had been extinguished. "A woman, 66, was rescued from the home in the 10700 block of South Prairie Avenue, but the boy, believed to be age 7, was found in an attic crawlspace by fire investigators several hours after the fire was put out," officials said. The initial article can be found HERE. An updated report stated that the boy, Omariontae Tucker, died from carbon monoxide poisoning and inhalation of smoke and soot. The Cook County medical examiner ruled his death accidental. This article is available HERE. In the most recent update from this morning, it was reported that the boy’s grandmother also passed away. "The fire that claimed a 7-year-old boy over the weekend also killed his grandmother, who died at a suburban hospital on Sunday afternoon," officials said. Barbara Scott, 61, was rescued from the home on Saturday and later died. An autopsy was scheduled for the following morning. "Officials initially said she was 66, but the medical examiner confirmed she was 61," said Cook County officials. This latest report can be read HERE.
