Industrial fire in Wheeling 12-19

On Sunday evening, the Wheeling Fire Department responded to an automatic alarm and discovered smoke billowing from an industrial facility located at 301 W. Hintz Road. The origin of the smoke was traced back to a malfunctioning machine positioned at the rear of the building. The Wheeling firefighters quickly received assistance from neighboring departments including Prospect Heights, Buffalo Grove, and Glenview. Thanks to their coordinated efforts, the fire was swiftly brought under control using both a hand line and the building's sprinkler system. Attached are several images capturing the scene during the firefighting operation. In one photo, you can see Wheeling Tower 42 ascending the building’s roof to ensure there was no extension of the fire and to assist with ventilation as thick smoke escaped through the overhead doors. Another image shows Wheeling Engine 24, a modern Spartan/Crimson model, being deployed to supply water to the sprinkler system after connecting to a nearby hydrant. This engine played a crucial role in containing the blaze. In another shot, Engine 24 is shown once again at the sprinkler connection, highlighting its pivotal position in the operation. Meanwhile, Engine 42, which operates as Engine 23 when stationed half a block away, served as the standby unit ready to assist if needed. Buffalo Grove Tower 25, arriving under a Code 4 response, was set up at the rear of the building to provide additional support. The Prospect Heights Fire Department also contributed significantly to the effort. Their Engine 39, constructed by Alexis on an American LaFrance Eagle chassis, arrived automatically on the initial alarm. This engine was instrumental in the early stages of the response. Large industrial fans were strategically placed at the receiving dock to help pull smoke out of the factory, aiding visibility and safety for all personnel involved. As the situation unfolded, the teamwork between these departments ensured that the fire was extinguished efficiently without further complications. For those interested in more visual documentation of this incident, additional photographs can be viewed here. This event underscores the importance of preparedness and cooperation among emergency services in managing industrial fires effectively. It also highlights the critical role technology and proper maintenance play in preventing such incidents from escalating.
