Industrial fire in Wheeling 12-19

On Sunday evening, the Wheeling Fire Department responded to an automatic alarm and discovered smoke billowing from an industrial facility located at 301 W. Hintz Road. The source of the smoke was traced back to a malfunctioning machine positioned at the rear of the building. The Wheeling firefighters were quickly joined by additional support from Prospect Heights, Buffalo Grove, and Glenview. Thanks to their coordinated efforts, the fire was swiftly brought under control using a hand line and the building’s sprinkler system. As part of the response, Wheeling Engine 24—a Spartan/Crimson model—was dispatched and connected to a nearby hydrant to supply water to the sprinkler system. Meanwhile, Engine 42, operating as Engine 23, stood by as the reserve unit just half a block away from the incident site. Buffalo Grove Tower 25 also arrived on scene and set up operations in the rear of the building, providing crucial assistance. Additionally, Prospect Heights Engine 39, constructed by Alexis on an American LaFrance Eagle chassis, provided essential automatic aid upon the initial alarm. Efforts to manage the situation included deploying large fans at the receiving dock to help extract smoke from the factory. Wheeling Tower 42 even ascended to the roof of the building to assess any potential spread of the fire and assist with ventilation. Photographer Larry Shapiro captured several powerful images documenting the scene, including the deployment of equipment and the teamwork involved in managing the situation. Despite the rapid response and effective coordination among departments, the event served as a stark reminder of the importance of regular maintenance checks for industrial machinery. It also highlighted the critical role played by well-trained firefighters and modern firefighting technology in mitigating potential hazards.
