Shiyan Daily reported that the automobile industry in Shiyan City has developed a comprehensive system, integrating medium- and heavy-duty trucks, passenger cars, mini-vehicles, special-purpose vehicles, and components. This robust industrial framework provides abundant resources and strong support for the export of automobiles and parts, giving the city a certain level of international competitiveness.
Currently, Shiyan is home to over 200 automotive and parts companies offering more than 4,000 products. Among them, 100 are large-scale component manufacturers, 22 vehicle producers (19 local firms), and 14.5 million vehicles were produced in 2006. With 10,000 units manufactured, the total output value of the auto industry reached 26.3 billion yuan, accounting for 64% of the city’s overall industrial output. The sector continues to play a dominant role in the city's economy.
From 2001 to 2006, the city exported a total of $133.454 million worth of automobiles and parts, representing 23.1% of the province’s total auto exports and 51.6% of the city’s foreign trade exports. In the same period this year, from July to July, the city exported $16.19 million in auto parts and components, reflecting a 24.8% year-on-year increase, and making up 47.8% of the city’s foreign trade exports.
The city’s auto and parts exports exhibit several notable characteristics:
1. **Whole Vehicles as Core Export Products**: From 2001 to 2006, the city exported 6,529 vehicles (including CKD sets), which accounted for about 70% of total auto and parts exports. Since the beginning of this year, with national efforts to regulate auto exports, the city has actively expanded its international market presence. In the past year, the city exported 789 vehicles, a 73.4% increase, including 6 new exporters—two manufacturing and four trading firms.
2. **Rise of SMEs in Exports**: There are currently 112 enterprises qualified for auto and parts imports and exports, including 51 manufacturers, 38 trading companies, and 23 foreign-funded firms. In 2006, 17 companies had export performance, rising to 18 this year—a 4.5-fold increase since 2001. Most of these are small and medium enterprises, except Hubei Dongfeng, the largest exporter.
3. **Dominance of Key Enterprises**: Hubei Dongfeng remains the leading player in the city’s auto exports, accounting for an average of 87.9% of total auto and parts exports between 2001 and 2006. Although its share has declined slightly in recent years, it still exceeds 60%.
4. **Improving Product Quality**: Through strategies like "strengthening trade with science and technology" and "winning with quality," companies have enhanced their understanding of product standards and reputation. Many have improved quality management systems, with 85% certified under quality and environmental standards. Over 42% believe their technology is relatively advanced internationally.
5. **Diversified Market Structure**: The main markets are Asia and Africa, with exports to developing countries such as Myanmar, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Egypt. A smaller portion goes to the U.S., Japan, and Europe. Recently, Russia and neighboring countries have shown promising growth, helping to diversify the city’s export markets.
Despite these strengths, challenges remain. The city’s auto exports lag significantly compared to other cities in the province. While the auto industry’s output is 26.3 billion yuan, exports only reached $19.035 million, far below the provincial average. Additionally, the city lacks export clusters, has limited scale, and faces talent and funding shortages, especially among SMEs.
To revitalize the export sector, the city should focus on independent innovation, brand building, and technological upgrades. It should also expand into emerging markets, enhance policy support, improve service mechanisms, and invest in human resources. By doing so, Shiyan can strengthen its position in the global automotive industry and drive sustainable economic growth.
