Spodoptera litura will eat the leaves into a net shape in late July to enter the main damage period

There is a destructive pest that frequently damages crops such as beans, alfalfa, and lotus roots. In severe infestations, the leaves are often eaten into a lacy, net-like pattern, while fruits are drilled into, significantly reducing both the quality and yield of vegetables. This pest is known as *Spodoptera litura*, commonly referred to as the cotton bollworm or armyworm. According to a recent survey conducted by the Plant Protection Station in Hangzhou, moth activity reached peak levels on July 6 and July 9, with numbers higher than those recorded during the same period in previous years. This indicates a growing threat from this pest, especially given the current weather conditions. The high population of *Spodoptera litura* is closely linked to the city’s prolonged periods of high temperatures. Based on their analysis, the Plant Protection Station predicts that the moth will enter its main damage phase in late July, and the impact is expected to last for an extended period. Due to its rapid reproduction, sudden outbreaks, broad diet, and increasing resistance to pesticides, *Spodoptera litura* is challenging to manage. Experts recommend focusing on adult control strategies, such as using insecticidal lamps and pheromone traps to reduce mating and egg-laying. Farmers are also advised to manually remove egg masses and clusters of larvae from the fields as soon as they are spotted. For chemical control, several effective options are available, including a 15% suspension concentrate diluted at 3000 times, Aolu No. 2000 solution, and a 10% emulsifiable concentrate diluted at 1500 times. These can be applied through spraying to target the larvae effectively. However, it's important to note that timing plays a key role in successful pesticide application. Since *Spodoptera litura* larvae are most active during the evening, it's best to apply treatments during this time. Additionally, farmers should use high-efficiency, low-toxicity, and low-residue pesticides to minimize environmental impact. To prevent the development of pesticide resistance, it is advisable to rotate different types of pesticides and use them in a rational and planned manner. By combining these preventive and control measures, farmers can better manage this persistent pest and protect their crops from significant losses.
