Ground-driven screw pump is an innovative oil recovery technology that uses rotational motion to efficiently lift crude oil, minimizing mechanical and fluid losses. Its simple structure and cost-effective design give it a significant advantage over traditional oil production equipment, making it a promising solution with broad development potential. In China, this technology has already been applied on a large scale in major oil fields such as Daqing, Dagang, and Jidong, delivering impressive economic benefits.
As a mechanical oil recovery system, screw pump technology has matured in both domestic manufacturing and field applications. Supporting components, like specialized drive rods, are also continuously improving. Compared to conventional pumping units, the screw pump requires lower initial investment—only half the cost of pumping equipment and lifting systems. It also offers higher system efficiency, about 20% more than traditional units, and can save up to 50 kWh of energy per day. Maintenance is easier, as it doesn’t require heavy lifting equipment, significantly reducing the physical burden on workers. Additionally, it performs well in challenging conditions, such as sand-producing wells, where sand jams are less likely.
Beyond saving energy and reducing operational costs, this technology helps extend the production life of oil wells and minimizes damage to reservoir formations. Its application prospects look very bright. This year, the technology was tested in two wells: Shu 4-7-014 and Qi 2-5-3012. The Qi 2-5-3012 well is operating normally, with a daily output of 28.8 tons, an average power consumption of 112.5 kWh, a pump efficiency of 98.5%, and a system efficiency of 23.5%. The performance compared to conventional methods is clearly visible.
Field tests have shown that the technology is most suitable for wells with temperatures below 50°C, fluid viscosity under 8,000 mPa·s, sand content below 5%, and adequate liquid supply. From an economic standpoint, optimizing the development system and reducing production costs, it is entirely feasible to replace traditional pumping units with screw pump technology in thin oil and heavy oil cold block areas that meet these criteria.
