On April 29, 2013, the Chicago Fire Department's Englewood Fire Alarm Office received a call about a car wash fire. Engine 47 was the first to arrive and reported a large one-story bow-string truss roof building engulfed in flames. A Still & Box alarm was requested by Engine 47. Upon the arrival of the 18th Battalion, the incident was escalated to a defensive operation due to the truss roof and heavy fire conditions. A 2-11 alarm was then issued by the 18th Battalion.
Tower Ladder 34, Tower Ladder 37, and Squad 5A were deployed for tower operations. As the fire continued to burn intensely, a 3-11 alarm was called by the Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner (2-1-11). Fire companies operated defensively for approximately two hours before the alarm was reduced by the Deputy Fire Commissioner (2-1-5).
The following companies responded to the Still Alarm: Engines 47 and 60, Tower Ladder 37, Truck 15, Squad 5, Command Van 2-7-4, and both the 17th and 18th Battalions. The Box Alarm included Engines 63 and 45, Truck 51, along with the 21st and 23rd Battalions. For the 2-11 Alarm, Engines 54, 72, and 84, Truck 16, Tower Ladder 34, Engine 28 with Light Wagon 5, the 15th and 20th Battalions, and 6-4-4 were dispatched. The 3-11 Alarm involved Engines 39, 123, 116, 50, and 49, as well as 5-7-1.
Photos from the scene were captured by Dennis Walus, who documented the intense fire at a vacant warehouse in Chicago.
