New Glenview fire station passes first hurdle

The Chicago Sun-Times recently published an article detailing the approval of the new fire station headquarters for Glenview, which is set to be built at 1815 Glenview Road. The project received the green light from the Glenview Plan Commission after a public hearing that allowed residents to share their thoughts and concerns about the development. During the meeting, several community members expressed worries about potential noise from emergency vehicles and the lighting around the site. In response, Deputy Fire Chief Ralph Ensign explained that sirens and horns will only be used when absolutely necessary, even during daytime hours. Additionally, the updated traffic design at the intersection in front of the station is expected to reduce the need for loud alerts when trucks enter or exit. Regarding the lighting issue, Jeff Brady, Glenview’s director of planning, mentioned that proposed landscaping and fencing will serve as a natural buffer between the station and nearby homes. The new fire trucks also feature lower-mounted headlights, which should prevent glare from shining into residential windows. While the plan was approved, the commission provided some recommendations to the architects from AT Group, who are overseeing the project. One major concern was the architectural style of the building, which combines a residential look for the administrative offices with a more commercial design for the fire station itself. Commission member Mark W. Igleski pointed out that the structure “looks like two different buildings,” highlighting the visual mismatch. Ellen Dickson, another commissioner, expressed her concern that the residential elements—such as high ceilings and peaked gables—don’t fit the purpose of a civic facility. “I think we’re creating empty space for aesthetics,” she said. “I would strongly suggest that the Village Board avoid mixing metaphors and ensure the building looks like a proper civic structure.” These comments will be reviewed by the appearance board on Wednesday. If no further issues are raised, the final plan could be presented to the Village Board at their meeting on September 17.
