Fatal high-rise fire in Chicago 1-22-13

A 2-11 alarm fire erupted today at 6730 South Shore Drive, prompting a major emergency response that included an EMS Plan II. According to the Chicago Tribune, the blaze resulted in the tragic loss of two men and left a woman in critical condition. The incident occurred in a high-rise building, and all three victims were found in full cardiac arrest due to smoke inhalation, as reported by Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford. The two men, one in his 30s and the other in his 40s, were discovered on the seventh floor, while the woman was found in the lobby. Both men were pronounced dead at different hospitals—first at the University of Chicago Medical Center and later at Jackson Park Hospital. The woman, however, was successfully revived through CPR by paramedics and was taken to the same medical center for further treatment. One firefighter sustained minor injuries during the operation. The fire broke out around 8:40 a.m., and quickly escalated to a 3-11 alarm, with officials requesting at least 10 ambulances. Firefighters worked from ladders to tackle the flames on the seventh floor, while others attempted to reach residents on balconies on the opposite side of the building. Langford suggested the fire may have originated in a bedroom on the seventh floor, before spreading to an apartment on the eighth floor. By 9:25 a.m., the fire was under control. Despite the severity of the situation, the fire department did not order an evacuation, advising residents to remain in their apartments for safety. Firefighters then went door to door to check on occupants. The scene outside the building became chaotic, with water from hoses and hydrants freezing into sheets of ice. Dozens of fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars lined South Shore Drive as emergency crews worked tirelessly to manage the situation.
