The TribLocal recently published an article highlighting concerns from Glenview trustees regarding the escalating costs of the new fire department headquarters station 6, located at 1215 Waukegan Road.
Initially, officials estimated the project would cost around $5.44 million. However, during a recent village meeting, developers warned that the price could increase by approximately 15%, or about $816,000, due to added expansions and architectural upgrades suggested in earlier discussions. These changes include additional bunks, space for more equipment, and enhanced design elements meant to improve functionality and aesthetics.
The new fire station is set to replace the former police station on the same site. The need for this new location arose after a four-story development forced the relocation of Fire Station 1815 Glenview Road. In the meantime, a temporary station has been operating at the intersection of Glenview Road and Roosevelt Avenue since early spring.
On October 1, the village trustees approved a conditional use ordinance, final site review, and preliminary subdivision approval for the fire station. Construction fences were recently installed, signaling the start of demolition work on the old police building. However, the final budget isn't expected to be confirmed until a November trustees meeting, which could push back the completion date by a few months. Originally, the station was scheduled to open in June or July 2014.
Some trustees have raised questions about the necessity of the expanded design, which added roughly $375,000 to the budget. They expressed a desire to stay within the original cost estimate. Trustee Deborah Karton emphasized the importance of the building’s appearance in the downtown area, noting that officials had spent considerable time developing a vision for the neighborhood.
Fire Chief Wayne Globerger stressed that the goal is to ensure the building is practical and efficient. He explained that the expansion, which includes three extra bunks and an additional half bay, allows the department to better prepare for future scenarios, including the potential consolidation of Fire Station 13 with the new facility.
The debate over the building's "street appeal" has also influenced the cost. There have been discussions among officials about possibly relocating the village campus near the newly constructed Glenview Police Department headquarters at 2500 E. Lake Ave. This idea is still under consideration and could impact the exterior design of the fire station.
Currently, the village hall does not align with the overall vision for downtown Glenview. “We’re trying to get pricing both ways,†Globerger said. “The question is how fancy do they want the outside of the fire station to look?â€
