Garage fire in Crystal Lake 11-22-12

A house fire broke out in Crystal Lake on Thanksgiving Day, caused by a deep fryer. According to the Northwest Herald, the incident occurred around noon on Thursday when Jon Ring was prepping for his family's Thanksgiving meal at 707 Windsor Drive. He had just turned on a deep fryer when the fire started in the garage. Kim Ring, Jon’s wife, recalled the moment she noticed the smoke. “It was windy outside,” she said. “I came outside and smelled smoke. I knew it was the garage, so I ran in and told everyone, ‘The garage is on fire—get out!’” Jon has been deep-frying turkeys for over 15 years, but this time, things went wrong. The fire quickly spread, causing significant damage. The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department estimated the damage at around $80,000 due to heat, smoke, and water. Fire departments from McHenry Township and Woodstock also responded to the call. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with deep frying, especially during holidays when many people prepare large meals. Fortunately, no one was injured, and the family escaped safely. You can read the full story here. Photos from Tyler Tobolt capture the aftermath of the fire:
